The City of DeKalb is currently looking to fill multiple positions working in our public works operations over the summer. Duration will be approximately May to August (flexible on start and end date).
The Public Works Seasonal Maintenance position performs miscellaneous grounds maintenance on City property, painting, hydrant flushing, etc. Staff will be assigned to work in the Street and Airport divisions of the Public Works Department or in the Water Department.
Must be at least 18 years of age by start date!POSITION CONTEXT:
The Public Works Seasonal Maintenance position is assigned to either the Public Works Department or the Water Department. The Public Works Seasonal Maintenance is a temporary, full-time, non-exempt position that will work 40 hours per week. This temporary position will not exceed more than a 6-month term of employment and 1000 hours in a 12-month period.
The work schedule will consist of hours generally between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Weekends, holidays, and/or night work is rare, except during exceptional circumstances.
Initial review will be Monday, March 23, 2026. The positions will remain open until filled.
Essential Functions

- Drives to and from various City properties to complete grounds maintenance tasks.
- Mows grass utilizing gas-powered hand mower and/or riding mower.
- Aerates, trims, weeds and edges grounds. Rakes and clears debris.
- Paints and operates fire hydrants for inspection and maintenance.
- Assists with minor building and facility maintenance.
- Communicates and responds to resident inquires in a professional and courteous manner.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Ability to operate instruments, tools and equipment that are job-related.
- Ability to maneuver uneven, outdoor terrain.
- Ability to work independently and handle field assignments with minimal supervision while exercising good judgment and initiative.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, staff members, elected officials, property owners, residents, contractors and the general public.
- Knowledge or the ability to learn the geographic regions of the City.
- Ability to drive to and from various work-sites.
Minimum Qualifications

Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid driver's license and good driving required.
Experience:
- Previous experience in public works maintenance or related experience preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- This positon will routinely work in an outdoor setting. While working the outdoors, the person in this position will regularly stand for prolonged periods of time, stoop, kneel, bend, climb, crawl or crouch. Will also maneuver uneven, outdoor terrain.
- This position will be exposed to weather elements including cold, wind, rain and heat while performing duties.
- The position will occasionally lift, move or replace heavy objects or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Physical working conditions which may provide exposure to air contaminates such as dust, fumes, smoke, dirt, disagreeable odors, low illumination, poor visibility, noise, etc.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Non-CDL City vehicles, ladders, hand/power tools, zero-turn riding mowers and other gas/electric powered lawn equipment.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
All employees are required to furnish their own steel-toed safety shoes/boots; all other required protection equipment will be furnished by the Department.
The selection process includes submission of an application, interview, and a background check. The physical examination and drug screen are completed upon conditional offer.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assists other departmental staff with tasks and performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
